Germany's electricity transmission network is divided among four transmission system operators: 50Hertz, Amprion, TenneT and TransnetBW. They operate the extra-high-voltage backbone that moves large volumes of electricity across regions and connects Germany with neighbouring systems.
The transmission grid should not be confused with the much larger number of local distribution networks that connect most individual consumers and businesses.
Why four operators matter to one national market
Each TSO has a defined control area, but the German power market and European grid are interconnected. Investment decisions therefore have both regional and system-wide effects.
Renewable generation in the north and large demand centres elsewhere increase the importance of north-south transmission capacity.
Grid expansion has become industrial policy
Factories, electrolyzers and data centres can announce projects faster than high-voltage connections can be built. A site with land and customer demand can still be constrained by the electricity network.
That makes transmission planning relevant to corporate location strategy, not only energy policy.
Track approval, construction and energisation separately
A line identified in a network plan is not yet operating capacity. Permitting, route approval, procurement and construction can take years.
GBR will keep those stages separate in grid coverage, just as it does for data-centre projects.
