Germany's machinery and plant-engineering sector is the industrial system behind many of the country's best-known hidden champions. VDMA describes the sector as Germany's largest industrial employer, with about 1.2 million employees, roughly €255 billion in domestic sales and an export ratio of around 83%.

That export intensity is both the sector's strength and its vulnerability. German companies can dominate highly specialised equipment niches globally, but orders depend on investment cycles in the United States, China, Europe and other manufacturing markets.

Exports are the business model, not a side channel

VDMA data put German machinery exports at roughly €200 billion, around a third of EU machinery exports in 2024. The sector sells capital goods, so demand can react sharply when manufacturers postpone factory investment or when trade restrictions change project economics.

The same structure explains why specialist German suppliers can remain relatively small in headcount while serving global customer bases. A niche machine or component can be sold into hundreds of factories without creating a consumer brand.

Automation pressure is rising even as orders weaken

Germany's robotics and automation industry entered 2026 with weaker demand. Industry reporting based on VDMA expectations pointed to a further revenue decline for the sector after a difficult 2025. That does not remove the long-term automation case, but it does show that structural demand and annual order cycles can move in different directions.

For Mittelstand manufacturers, labour shortages and international cost pressure still favour automation. The question is whether domestic suppliers retain enough scale and innovation speed as Asian competitors increase market share.

Why this sector matters beyond its own revenue

Machinery companies sit upstream of automotive, chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, logistics and energy. Their order books are therefore an unusually broad signal of capital spending across the industrial economy.

GBR will connect machinery-company profiles to its hidden-champion database, robotics coverage and regional manufacturing guides rather than treating the industry as a single annual sales figure.
