German launch startup Isar Aerospace has crossed the line that matters most in the rocket business: reaching orbit. The company's Spectrum vehicle lifted off from its dedicated launch complex at Andøya Space in Norway at 10:12 pm CEST on 5 September and deployed payloads in orbit, according to Isar Aerospace.
The achievement came on Spectrum's second flight. That makes the result more important than another funding or contract announcement. Isar Aerospace can now point to an orbital mission rather than a development programme, giving customers, governments and suppliers a materially stronger basis on which to judge the company's launch capability.
The second flight changed the evidence around Spectrum
Spectrum's first test flight in 2025 did not reach orbit. Isar Aerospace subsequently changed software and system margins after analysing that mission, while later launch attempts in 2026 were delayed or scrubbed as the company worked through technical issues. The 5 September mission therefore tested whether that learning cycle had produced a vehicle capable of completing the core task.

The order book is beginning to show the type of missions the company wants to win. On 1 September, Isar announced an agreement with Astroscale Japan for the ADRAS-J2 active debris-removal mission, targeted for 2027 to 2028. German Business Review's view is that the 5 September flight materially improves Isar Aerospace's position because it replaces one of the hardest unanswered questions with demonstrated evidence. The company has shown that Spectrum can reach orbit and deploy payloads. That is a different category of proof from a prototype, engine test or signed memorandum.
The harder commercial questions now become visible. Launch frequency, mission reliability, manufacturing cost, customer concentration and the economics of expanding across multiple spaceports will determine whether Isar becomes a durable European launcher rather than a technically successful programme. For Germany's deep-tech economy, however, reaching orbit is a milestone with unusually clear industrial significance.
